The #2 Batesville Lady Bulldogs are moving on to the sectional finals after a 3-1 win over the #9 Lawrenceburg Lady Tigers. The sectional finals will pair the Lady Bulldogs against the South Dearborn Lady Knights at 2:00PM Saturday afternoon.
The match started off with Batesville pressuring Lawrenceburg for much of the first half. The Lady Tigers made a couple great individual plays by their GK and defenders to save some close call opportunities. With 12 minutes to play in the half, the Lady Bulldogs finally found the back of the net. Olive Cerniglia played a nice penetrating pass to Georgia Gratz along the left wing, Gratz made a move around the Lady Tiger defender and crossed the ball to Hailey Mohr who was crashing hard from the backside and Mohr tucked away the cross for the score. The Lady Bulldog defense was solid throughout the half limiting the Lawrenceburg opportunities.
In the second half, the Lady Tigers came out of halftime fired up and were able to get the Lady Bulldogs back on their heels for the first 5 minutes of the half. Jenna Farmer netted the equalizer off a nice cross from Makenna White. Despite giving up the goal, Batesville got back to the way they played in the first half and began taking over the game and winning all the 50/50 balls. Liz Heidlage played a great ball into the box on a corner kick with 26 minutes to play and after a couple deflections, Carlie Werner got a great shot on goal that was saved and Gratz was there to poke it into the back of the net for the game-winning score. Batesville added an insurance goal with 19 minutes to play. Gratz drew a foul just outside the 18 yard box. Denise Davalos has been converting free kicks from this range all season long, and this one was no different. After propping the ball up nicely on the grass, Davalos stepped into the shot and ripped it just under the crossbar and out of reach of Lawrenceburg goalkeeper Olivia Bosch.
Ellie Cassidy, Heldlage, Abbey Prickel, Lily Meyer, Cerniglia played phenomal defense throughout the match. Ellie Waechter recorded 3 saves on the night with several great grabs on corner kicks from the Lady Tigers. Coach Laker commented on the match saying, “overall, it was a great team effort by all players involved and the ladies have earned a shot at the sectional crown on Saturday.”
