The Batesville Lady Bulldogs defeated the Franklin County Lady Wildcats by a final score of 5-0 in the opening match of IHSAA Class 2A Sectional 27. Both teams fought hard throughout the game knowing that this could possibly be their last. Despite having 17 shots in the first half, the Lady Bulldogs struggled to find the back of the net. Shelby Pearson seemed to stop everything that was thrown her way for the first 33 minutes. With 7 minutes remaining in the first half, Hailey Mohr made a hustle play after a nice cross from Carlie Werner to put Batesville on top. The Lady Bulldogs played add on with less than 2 minutes to play in the half. After a series of corner kicks, Batesville earned an 8th corner kick for the half which Georgia Gratz played a perfect ball to the back post as Liz Heidlage lunged for the volley and put it in the back of the net. The Batesville defense limited the Lady Wildcats to one shot for the first half.
In the second half, Batesville found the back of the net three more times. Lauren Gutzwiller added the third on an assist from Ashley Nobbe. Mohr added her 2nd of the match on an unassisted goal with 15 minutes to play in the match. The 5th and final score came from a great assist by Gutzwiller who played it to Catherine Raab wide open in the 6 yard box. Heidlage, Denise Davalos, Abbey Prickel, Lily Meyer, Olive Cerniglia, and goalkeeper Ellie Waechter stopped every counter-attack that Franklin County attempted.
Batesville will play in match 3 of Sectional 27 as they host the Lawrenceburg Lady Tigers at 7:00 PM on Thursday night.
