But not this year.
The Batesville Bulldogs captured the Class 3A sectional title at Greensburg on Saturday night with a 69-56 victory over the No. 2 ranked Pirates.
The Bulldogs and Pirates battled to a 15-15 tie after the first eight minutes. Batesville followed up with a 20 point second quarter. The quarter was highlighted by a Colt Meyer lay-up then a steal and 3-pointer by Robert Raver at the buzzer. The late flurry put Batesville on top 35-28.
Coach Aaron Garrett’s crew managed to extend the lead by two points despite a low scoring third quarter. Batesville entered the final period with a 45-36 lead.
A lead they would not relinquish despite additional pressure applied by the Pirates. Batesville secured the victory by hitting 16-of-18 free throws in the final quarter. Meyer went 7-of-8, while Sam Voegele was a perfect 6-of-6.
Robert Raver finished the game with a team-high 22 points followed by Meyer with 17. Voegele was also in double figures with 11.
