Seniors Katie Bohman, Berto Davalos, and Captain Whitney Drew traveled to Glenbrook South High School in Glenview, IL to attend the UDA Dance Team Combine.
The combine is a great opportunity for high school sophomores, juniors and seniors to prepare for dance at the collegiate level, according to coach Denette Callahan. The day consisted of technique, learning and performing jazz, pom and hip hop combos, and interacting with coaches from the best college dance teams from all over the country. Individual dancers received feedback on what to continue to work on prior to their college audition. The day also included time to interact with college coaches and ask questions about their programs. The college coaches had the opportunity to observe dancers at the clinic and reach out directly about their dance team.
There were over 25 Colleges in attendance, including nationally ranked Ohio State University, nationally ranked University of Cincinnati, Clemson University, the University of Michigan, Purdue University and Butler University.
“It was an eye-opening experience to see what it is like to be part of a college team,” Drew commented. “The things I learned will help me to be prepared for auditions in the future. It was a great experience.”
Davalos’ thoughts on the event “The combine was an excellent experience and as a dancer, I’ve learned so much about how to be prepared to try out for a college dance team. I encourage those who are interested in dance beyond high school to definitely go to this event – It is truly worth it.”
“The Combine was an eye-opening experience,” Bohman said. “Since that day, I’ve received emails from multiple collegiate dance programs urging me to consider participating in their programs.”
This is the first time that anyone from the Batesville Dance Team has attended the combine, according to Callahan.
