Batesville High School
Lawrenceburg High School
The Batesville Lady Bulldogs claimed their second sectional championship in a row by defeating Lawrencburg 2-1 in overtime.
Both teams had a few opportunities in the first half to strike first. After a deflection off of a Lawrenceburg forward, Gabi Garcia made a great reaction save to keep the ball out of the goal, according to coach Kyle Laker. Despite the save, the ball was still rolling towards the goal until Baylee Rohlfing made a great save by kicking the ball up and over the goal, he added.
With four minutes to play in the half, Taylor Rowlett was able to find the back of the net to put the Lady Bulldogs up 1-0. Georgia Gratz made a quick turn and found Rowlett at the top of the box. After some nice footwork by Rowlett to get space for a shot, she struck a left-footed shot into the near post side net for the score.
In the second half, Lawrenceburg was able to strike back and even the score at 1-1. After a foul deep in Batesville territory, Seig struck a nice free kick that dipped just under the cross bar for the equalizer goal.
End of regulation came and the game was still knotted at 1-1.
Just 30 second into overtime, Carlie Werner found Rowlett on a throw-in that led Rowlett to the end line where she slid the ball across the Lawrenceburg 6- yard box and Marigrace Anderson was open on the back side for the finish.
The Batesville defense had 13 minutes to secure the victory, and they did just that. In overtime, Batesville controlled the ball bad pace of the game and only allowed 1 shot in each overtime period.
Batesville improves to 16-2 on the season and will face New Palestine on Saturday at noon at New Palestine.
