The Batesville Bulldogs defeated Lawrenceburg 2-0 in the championship match of the Rushville Sectional.
The wind was a huge obstacle for both teams with gusts 20+ mph greatly affecting the path of the ball. The Tigers won the coin toss and they got the wind advantage for the first half.
“This made defending a challenge because every ball was sent further and more unpredictable in our direction,” BHS coach Kyle Hunteman commented. “Fortunately, the Bulldogs defense held up and kept the score 0-0 by half time.
“Once the hardest part of the match was over, it was our turn to bring the attack to them with the gusts of wind blowing towards their goal,” he added.
Justin Puente crossed a ball into the box and Gave Straub scored after the ball was deflected with an impressive back heel catching the defense off guard. Salvador Blanco played a ball diagonal out to Michael Ripperger who beat his defender 1v1 with a nicely placed shot from wide right into the far side or the net. Lawrenceburg finished the half with some intensity, but it wasn’t enough to break the shutout.
