Mt Vernon High School (fortville)
Batesville High School
The Batesville Lady Bulldogs hosted the Mt. Vernon (Fortville) Lady Marauders on Monday night at the Dog Pound. Both teams entered the game 11-1 on the season and it looked to be a good matchup.
In the first half, the Lady Bulldogs controlled possession and out-shot the Lady Marauders 10 – 4. Marigrace Anderson scored the first goal of the match with 34 minutes to play in the first half. Carlie Werner got loose on the left flank and ripped a shot that was deflected off the crossbar by the keeper and Anderson was at the top of the 18 for the rebound and took a 1-time shot that also hit the crossbar but bounced down and into the goal for the score. Both teams had two more good opportunities to score, but both keepers made tremendous saves to keep the score 1-0 at halftime. Molly Wintz recorded 2 saves for the match for the Lady Bulldogs.
In the second half, the Lady Bulldogs would jump out to a 3-0 lead with 24 minutes left in the match. The second goal was scored seven minutes into the second stanza when Ellie Cassidy played a short corner to Gabi Garcia’s feet and Garcia wall passed it back to Cassidy who took on a defender and beat the keeper with a hard, low shot inside the near post. It was Cassidy’s second goal on the season and she has now scored in two straight contests. Garcia also assisted the third Lady Bulldog score. This time Garcia found Hailey Mohr who went hard into a tackle and won the ball and her shot went up and over the Mt. Vernon GK to put Batesville up 3-0.
After a few lineup changes, the Mt. Vernon offense began to click. With 13 minutes to go in the game, Alexi Hardi ripped a shot into the side net from distance to begin the Lady Marauder comeback. Just a minute later, the Lady Bulldogs committed a foul 25 yards out from goal. Riley Hurst stepped up to the free kick and took a nice shot that found the back of the net. With the score 3-2 with less than 12 minutes to play, the contest got a lot more exciting from a fan perspective.
The Lady Bulldog defense did a great job to shot down any further comeback from Mt. Vernon and held on to the 3-2 victory. Allison Storms did a great job playing a high line defensively and was getting involved with the attack up top.
Coach Laker commented on his defense, “Bre Moman played a physical game in the back and shut down the Lady Marauders leading scorer. Baylee Rohlfing continues to dominate every 50/50 ball and used her physicality to block any attack from the Lady Marauders. Ellie Cassidy is becoming an weapon offensively for the Lady Bulldogs while still controlling the center of our defense.”
This was another big test for the Lady Bulldogs as they improved to 12-1 on the season.
