Greensburg High School
The Batesville Lady Bulldogs were victorious in Game 2 of Sectional 26 over the host Greensburg Lady Pirates by a final score of 7-0.
It took the Lady Bulldogs 12 minutes to find the back of the net. The Greensburg defense did a nice job defending for the first 10 minutes and were able to hold the Batesville offense back. However, at the 28:53 mark in the first half, sophomore Taylor Rowlett was fouled inside of the box for a penalty kick. Senior, Mary Elizabeth Elkins stepped up and buried the shot into the side net to start the scoring for the Lady Bulldogs. Freshman, Georgia Gratz added two more goals for the Lady Bulldogs in the half. The first came off an excellent effort from Rowlett to keep the ball from going out of bounds and was able to pass the ball into the center of the box to Gratz who found space to score. The second came off a pass from sophomore Baylee Rohlfing and Gratz was able to put it away for her 2nd goal of the game.
In the second half, Batesville kept its momentum and added to the scoring column early. This time, the Batesville offense was able to earn a corner kick after a good offensive build up. Junior, Carissa Werner hit a perfectly placed cross to Gabi Garcia who headed the ball past the Greensburg goalkeeper. âThis was one of our best finishes of the year. Gabi attacked the ball and headed a hard shot past the keeperâ Coach Laker commented on the goal.
The Lady Bulldogs would add three more goals in the second half. Freshman, Avery Roell sent a through ball to Rowlett at the 22:10 mark and Rowlett drilled a shot across the goal and into the far net. The final two goals came from senior Morgan Puente. Freshman Caitlynn Werner took the throw in and found Puente just inside of the box and Puente slipped a left-footed shot past the goalkeeper. Werner later crossed the ball from the wing and Puente slid through the box to meet the ball for her 2nd score of the game.
The Batesville defense only gave up 2 shots, neither on goal for the entire match. Coach Laker commented on his defense saying, âOur defense had a dominating performance tonight. We played aggressive and worked hard for the shutout victory. The communication and possession game was excellent between our defenders tonight.â The defense was led by Gabi Garcia, Karsen Worthington, Carissa Werner, and Bre Moman. Ella Gutzwiller and Avery Roell also stepped in and played some big minutes for the Lady Bulldogs.
Batesville and East Central will battle for the sectional championship at 7:00 on Saturday night in Greensburg.
