Batesville High School
Lawrenceburg High School
The Batesville Lady Bulldogs traveled to Lawrenceburg on Tuesday night to face the Class 1A #1 ranked Lady Tigers.
After a tough battle for 20 minutes, Batesville began to settle down and began playing their game. Sophomore goalkeeper, Molly Wintz kept Batesville in the game with several nice saves and some aggressive play to win the ball before a Lawrenceburg forward could get to the ball. With 8:01 left to play in the half, Batesville was awarded a corner kick. Junior Carissa Werner hit a nice corner over the Lawrenceburg goalkeeper and junior Sylvia Phillips met the ball in the air for goal number 1. This was Phillipsâ 4th goal of the season. The Lady Bulldogs hung on to the 1-0 advantage going into the half despite being outshot 8-6 in the half.
The Lady Tigers came out in the second half with the same intensity they started the game. âWe had to weather the storm for the first 10-15 minutes of each half before we really settled in to our game,â Coach Laker commented. At the 33:31 mark in the second half, Batesville was able to counter quickly after a Lawrenceburg attack and sophomore Taylor Rowlett made an aggressive defensive play to win the ball and sent a through ball to freshman Georgia Gratz who was able to hit a hard angled shot past the Lady Tiger goalkeeper. This goal now brings the freshmanâs goal total to 13 to lead the team.
Lawrenceburg dominated the possession for much of the second half, but the Batesville defense did a great job of contesting every shot. Coach Laker commented on his defense, saying, âCarissa Werner and Jill Hartman were doing an excellent job getting in front of every shot the Lawrenceburg offense was taking. Bre Moman and Karsen Worthington also did a great job winning 50/50 balls and 1v1 against the Lady Tiger forwards.â With 11:57, Lawrenceburg was able to break through on the scoring column. Freshman Mckenna White was able to penetrate the left wing and hit a great left footed shot over Wintz and into the far side net of the goal. Less than 2 minutes later, Batesville was able to regain their 2-goal lead after freshman Ashlyn Czerniak was able to net her first career varsity goal. Czerniak initially took a shot from outside the 18 and Rowlett was able to get the rebound and put the ball back into the center of the box where Czerniak was able to knock it into the back of the net.
âSenior Captains, Mary Elizabeth Elkins and Kira Hertel have done a great job preparing this team mentally and physically. Tonight, they worked as hard as anyone I have ever coached. They were all over the field disrupting the Lawrenceburg offense and also leading the Batesville attack. I couldnât be more proud of these two and the effort and leadership they put into the game tonightâ – Coach Laker.
Batesville improves to 7-0 on the season and 4-0 in the conference. The Lady Bulldogs will be back in action on Thursday against the Columbus East Lady Olympians at 8:00.
