The Batesville Bulldogs junior varsity boys soccer team recorded its third straight win Tuesday night at home against the Shelbyville Golden Bears.
From the opening kickoff, the Bulldogs were the aggressors, according to coach Josh Meyer. Batesville was able to keep possession in the Shelbyville defensive half during the early going. The Bulldogs created multiple attacking chances, but saw their shots miss the target. The Golden Bears made the Bulldogs pay for their lack of finishing at the midway point of the first half and scored the game’s first goal.
The Bulldogs continued to press the Golden Bears the rest of the half, but the score remained 1-0 at halftime.
Once again, Batesville dominated possession and were able to create multiple attacking opportunities early in the second half. Less than 10 minutes into the period, Garrett Wagner was able to score the equalizer for the Bulldogs. Wagner finished by half-volleying a loose ball off a corner kick to make the score 1-1.
Minutes later, Wagner contributed once again to put Batesville on top. He played a ball over the top of the defense where Michael Ripperger finished on a volley. That goal would be the decision-maker, as the game ended with the Bulldogs on top 2-1.
“This was a third straight impressive performance by the team, and not coincidentally, our third straight win,” Meyer commented. “Every player on our team continues to contribute and improve each night, and we are really beginning to play well together.
“I thought that we were a little unlucky to be trailing at halftime, but our finishing just wasn’t clinical enough early on,” he added.
