The Batesville High School boys varsity basketball team advanced to the Class 3A sectional finals at Greensburg with victories on Franklin County and South Dearborn.
The Bulldogs (15-10) were 49-36 winners over Franklin County in the semifinals.
Blake Walsman, Matt Dennis and Wyatt Schebler each hit field goals within the first 1:30 of the game to put the Bulldogs out front 7-0.
The Wildcats later made a run of their own and cut the BHS lead to 13-11 by the end of the first quarter.
The game remained close the entire second quarter, but the Bulldogs never trailed. Batesville held a 19-17 lead at halftime.
Batesville stretched the lead to nine points on a 3-pointer by Jacob Vogelsang at the three-minute mark. A field goal late in the period by Walsman made it 34-23 at the break.
The Bulldogs led by as many as 14 points in the fourth quarter.
Walsman set the pace offensively for the Bulldogs with 21 points followed by Schebler with 10.
In the sectional opener against South Dearborn, it did not take long for the Bulldogs to set the tone.
Vogelsang had the hot hand and hit a trio of 3-pointers to lead the Bulldogs to a 16-7 advantage at the first break.
The Batesville lead gradually grew as the second quarter progressed. Another Vogelsang 3-pointer pushed the BHS lead to 28-9 with less than a minute remaining in the first half.
It did not take long for the Bulldogs to put the game out of reach. Coach Aaron Garrett’s crew outscored the Knights 25-9 in the third quarter to take a 53-20 lead into the final eight minutes.
Vogelsang finished with a team-high 20 points, while Walsman added 17.
