The Batesville High School varsity basketball team posted a 57-50 victory over the Shelbyville Golden Bears on Thursday to close out the regular season.
Typical to this year’s team, the Bulldogs kept the game close and took advantage of their opportunities. Coach Aaron Garrett’s crew fell behind 16-10 by the end of the first quarter, but trimmed it to a five deficit at halftime.
The Bulldogs evened the score by the end of the third quarter.
A field goal by Blake Walsman at the 4:21 mark put the Bulldogs in front 30-29, which was their first lead since the early stages of the game. The BHS lead grew to five points later in the third on a field goal by Matt Dennis.
Shelbyville bounced back to tie the score at 36-36 leading into the final eight minutes.
Batesville senior Austin Prickel gave the Bulldogs a lift with a trio of 3-pointers in the fourth quarter. All three baskets were at key points in the game, especially the final two. Prickel hit a 3-pointer a the 2:26 mark to put the Bulldogs on top 49-42 and later buried one at the 1:04 mark to help put the game out of reach.
Prickel, Walsman and Wyatt Schebler each hit free throws down the stretch to help preserve the seven-point victory.
Walsman was the team’s leading scorer with 22 points, while Dennis turned in a good effort with 17 points and a team-high eight rebounds. Prickel finished the game with 11 points.
The Bulldogs improved to 13-10 in the season and will open sectional play Tuesday, March 3, against the South Dearborn Knights at Greensburg.
